A Year of Italian Short Films 1993

1993 was an important year for the Italian short film. The reason lies not so much in the obvious quality of the production as in the opportunities that have arisen. There were opportunities to learn about the short film as a genre.
There were opportunities to win recognition in the great European film festivals. There were opportunities for the films to circulate in movie theaters, at least embryonically, There were opportunities to create the needed means for documentation, for information and for the distribution of the films abroad. There were opportunities for critical and organizational discussions as well as for television appearances. All these are valid, even though they happened more on the level of consciousness raising than on the level of economic gains and governmental support, which were both totally absent.
This series is not a festival and does not want to become one. However, it fits in this festival context because it wants to respond to a need by filling in a void. This series represents the first attempt to define the state of things year by year It aims to give a sufficiently full panorama of the Italian short film both on the artistic and the productive levels. It aims to serve as the meeting point for all the advances in the various areas where the short film is making headway: Italian and foreign festivals and series, Cannes, Venice, the show
