Synopsis

One night, a group of workers discovers that the management at the factory which employs them has organized a theft of the machinery. Realizing that this is an unmistakable sign of the company’s imminent bankruptcy, a few of them turn down the proposed severance pay and occupy the factory. But to their great surprise, the managers disappear into thin air, leaving them alone to decide how to run a half-empty factory, in a world where the crisis is rewriting the rules of labor economics.

Director statement

“In Portugal and Europe, the last few years have caused a brutal redefinition of the way in which we look at the world. A lack of prospects and valid discourses about the present has often made us feel ineffectual. A Fábrica de Nada stems from there. The closing of an elevator factory works as a microcosm and a parable for dramatically exploring the textures and consequences of the feeling of impotence that most people felt during that time.”
