Synopsis

A film diary shot between August 2016 and the same month one year later, which passes from the very slow reconstruction of L’Aquila, the city where the director lives, to the earthquake at Amatrice and Arquata del Tronto, to life in a hotel after the earthquakes at Norcia and Montereale-Campotosto. An intimate and ironical journey, lyrical and geometric, in which the story of life in a seismic area becomes the instrument for reflecting on the very meaning of filmmaking.

Emiliano Dante

Emiliano Dante (L’Aquila, Italy, 1974) debuted as a director in 2003 with a series of shorts about living, The Home Sequence Series. After making other shorts, he made two documentaries about life after an earthquake, Into the Blue (2009) and Habitat - Note personali (2014), both of which were presented at the Torino Film Festival, the start of a trilogy which concludes with Appennino. Besides documentaries, he also directed the fiction feature film Limen (2013). His work reflects a concept of radical authorship, personally making all the artistic components (screenplay, editing, music, cinematography and, when called for, animation). He is also a photographer, essayist and narrator.

Filmography:
The Home Sequence Series (serie/series, 2003-2005), Payphones (60) (cm, 2006), Into the Blue (doc., 2009), Limen (2013), Habitat - Note personali (mm, doc., 2014), Appennino (doc., 2017).

Director statement

“Appennino is not a movie about earthquakes. Or rather, it’s just as much about earthquakes as it is about the cinema of reality, about the sense of filming what we experience. And without a doubt, where I live, we experience earthquakes. It even seems as though, in recent years, the Apennines are specializing in them… Which is a catastrophe, but also a possibility to come into contact with something very profound, if you are able to grasp the experience in its complexity. Having lenses through which we look at things helps us to grasp the nuances, to pause on aspects which aren’t immediately visible within the panorama of an earthquake.”
