Tonino De Bernardi

Tonino De Bernardi, an underground filmmaker from 1967 to 1983, shot his first “official” feature in 1987: the film Elettra (based on Sophocles’ tragedy), produced by RAI3, involved the participation of non-professional actors from Casalborgone, where he worked as a middle school teacher until 1992. Viaggio a Sodoma (1988) was the co-winner, with Jean-Luc Godard’s film, of the World Wide Video Festival in Den Hag. Piccoli orrori (1994), produced by his company Lontane Province Film, received a special mention in Taormina, and a prize for Iaia Forte at Bellaria. He participated at the Venice Film Festival in competition with Appassionate (1999), and in Orizzonti with Médée miracle (2007). A restless filmmaker overflowing with projects, he makes at least a film a year, presenting them in Turin, Venice, Rotterdam, and São Paulo. In Onde section he’s also protagonist of Teresa Villaverde’s O termómetro de Galileu.

Director statement

«Ifigenia in Aulide is a tragedy of power and of the present day. Iphigenia is the sacrificial victim of her domineering father, like every victim. But the movie is also about our present day, and I want to think that the spectators will see it that way, too. Greek tragedy has been present in all my movies, from the archetypes of the underground scene to today. The Greek set of Ifigenia is thanks to Nikos Koletsos and Sandra Bosco, who for years have welcomed us at Amarynthos. The film is dedicated to Enrico Ghezzi (and to Fuori Orario), who gave me visibility on nighttime TV.”
