Synopsis

A short conversation about the upcoming year between an almanac seller and a passer-by, his potential client. Ermanno Olmi (Bergamo, Italy, 1931 - Asiago, Vicenza, Italy, 2018) made various documentaries about industrial production while working at Edison. In 1959, he shot his first feature film, Time Stood Still, and in 1963,  I fidanzati, which confirmed his interest in the world of ordinary people and daily life. In 1978, he won the Golden Palm in Cannes with The Tree of Wooden Clogs. After an illness forced him to stop working, he founded the school Ipotesi Cinema. After resuming his activity as a director, he won the Golden Globe and nine David di Donatello awards for The Profession of Arms.  In 2008, he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. In 2014, on the one hundredth anniversary of the start of WWI, he directed Torneranno i prati, and in 2017, he made his final movie, Vedete, sono uno di voi.

Director statement

“At a certain point, I began to caress the idea of making a live movie, that is, a story in which people talk and you record what they are saying. Thus, I needed a recording camera and not an ARRI, which is noisy. So I asked the management to buy a new movie camera […]. The new Eclair 300 arrived […]. I decided on Leopardi to test the movie camera […] because the author’s standing justified a screen test of such an important movie camera. Then I became interested in the intertwining of various notions of time: calendar time, the time of thought, of the aspirations for the future.”
