The vexata quaestio (in Chinese, zhengzhi weijue de wenti) has finally been answered: the Rome Film Festival will move from its traditional October dates to November, opening the 9th and closing the 17th - just six days before the start of the Turin Film Festival (23 November - 1 December).
Rome announced the date change in February, and the Turin Film Festival was alarmed: the mayors of our respective cities had already met and finalized this year’s dates. And we at the Turin Film Festival had already been using those official dates – event registration had been opened, and invitations had been issued. Now, after two months of bickering and fighting with the Romans, using all our artfully veiled willingness and subterranean nonchalance, we're right back to square one.
To say that we feel cheated is an understatement. It’s like saying we are going to war - with a budget of less than 2 million against one of about 12 million. All we can say now is: let’s move forward - the Turin Film Festival is worth the effort and the struggle. Now in its thirtieth year, it has created its own unique identity on the national scene, with its new discoveries, youthful freshness, retrospective shows, eccentric directors, and its national, European, international, and often world premieres. Let’s move forward with the current dates, because we feel, and have always felt, the warmth and appreciation of audiences, directors, and the characters that have ruled this city and this festival. Keep that warmth and appreciation coming - on the web, in newspapers, on our website, www.torinofilmfest.org, and in our screening rooms when the time comes – and together we’ll make 2012 another amazing festival.
