UIRÀ, UM INDIO EM BUSCA DE DEUS

UIRÀ, AN INDIAN ON THE SEARCH FOR GOD

Country: Brazil
Year: 1973
Duration: 90'

Uir` is an Indian of the Kaaporr tribe, who live on the banks of the Maranhão. He loses his son, Uiraru. After the funeral, he has a crisis of depression and looks for the shaman, who telIs him to drop everything and go off to war. Instead, he follows another piece of advice. He decides to look for Maira, the paradise that the Indians go to after they die. He goes off on a journey with his wife Katai and their two children, but things go badly. His wife disappears. His children are beaten up by other children. He himself is taken prisoner. Since he does not know the language of the white people, he is treated like a crazy person at São Luis, the capital of Maranhão. When he is freed, he sees the sea for the first time and he mistakes it for Maira. He returns to his village and then looks for Maira by throwing himself in the river.

"Uir` uses the general theories of Cinema Nôvo in a masterful way. It puts the actor back into reality. It opens roads that lead away from the accommodating confusion that exists between repression and creation. It points out the real as an object revealed in discourse which integrates scientific information with transcendence." (Glauber Rocha)
