POSSO DARLE UN FACSIMILE?

CAN I GIVE YOU A FACSIMILE?

Country: France
Year: 1996
Duration: 73'

"There are precise, crucial, neurological moments when it is possible to get ari image of the real conditions of a city and of the people that live there. This city is Palermo. The time period that I chose and that allowed us to get into the real city comprises the two weeks that preceded the regional elections of June 16, 1996. The candidates' stomping grounds were the city with its streets, its markets, and its piazzas. Their speeches found their counterpoint in the frank voice of the people. This is a push towards reflecting on the gap between the needs of the people and how they are answered by the politicians. It concerns all of us, including animals." (Daniele Incalcaterra)

Biography

film director

Atelier Video di Palermo

"The idea of an Atelier Video in Palermo came out of my desire to pass down my experience in the field of documentary film to the young people who live in a country like Italy where this genre is almost extinct, and, more precisely, in Sicily, a land that I love in a particular way for its complexity and for the great potential that it has. The Atelier was conceived as a free space, a privileged point where ideas, people, and film material can meet. In Palermo I found an excellent response among the young people who participated in this experience. There were nine young men and women between the ages of nineteen and thirty, almost all of them going through their first film experience. The Atelier had two objectives - practical training and the making of a collective film. Fundamental support came to us from several foreign professionals whom I had invited purposely to Palermo and who had enthusiastically accepted to make their experience available to the young people. Among them was Joaquim Pinto, Portuguese producer and director, who had begun his career as a sound engineer. He introduced the young pole to the direct recording of sound, fundamental for the making of this type of cinema. After a brief period of training and exercise, the young people chose the people they wanted to follow different as regards age, social class, job, and political calling. They followed these people in their lives - their social relations, their ivork, and their families during the last two weeks of the electoral campaign for the regional assembly. So many of these 'individual' stories, like the stones in a mosaic, became the sequences that make up the film." (Daniele Incalcaterra)
