In California, during the Depression, a group of people who are down on their luck dance for hundreds of hours at a dance marathon, egged on by the audience and the dizzying tempo set by the master of ceremonies, a foul, icy Gig Young (who won an Oscar). The prize: $1,500. If you fall down, you’re out. Pollack’s fifth movie as director, based on the novel by Horace McCoy, a claustrophobic nightmare, engrossing and violent, leaving viewers breathless and hopeless. With an aching Jane Fonda.
