Glauber Rocha

Glauber Rocha (Vitória da Conquista, Brazil, 1939 – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1981) was one of the fathers of Cinéma Nôvo, a film movement that started breathing new life into Brazilian cinema in the Sixties. His opus includes features like Black God, White Devil (1964), Entranced Earth (1967), and Antonio das mortes (1968, Palm d’Or in Cannes for Best Director). His work was connected to the tales and traditions of Brazil, it was combined with his expressive research, his political activism against capitalism and the cultural homologation of his country. During the Seventies, he traveled and worked around Africa and Europe, collaborating also with Carmelo Bene, among others.

Declaration

film director

“Actually, I don’t consider myself a ‘real’ film maker at all. By training and vocation I am a musician and performace artist, although the time I spent with Glauber widened the horizons of my aesthetic eye. Life Is Strange is the title Glauber and I gave to this little 8mm film, made in Essaouira. Neither one of us expected anyone to see it but our friends. Basically this was a ‘family vacation’ home movie. A hippy sojourn in the age of ‘peace and love.’ After forty years of hanging on to the footage while living in four different continents, it has been a revelation to see these amazing images brought to life again through the wizardy of technology. The addition of my soundtrack with music by Gnawa musicians and my own Voice and Free Improvisations has made this a true synergistic melding between Glauber’s camera work and my music.”
