NO TEARS FOR ANANSE
by Sam Aryeteey
Country: Ghana
Year: 1967
Duration: 75'

The adventures of Ananse, the spider-man and brother of the god of the sky as well as a symbol of skill and shrewdness and a classic character in traditional Akan legends. The first feature film made in Ghana, it is also one of the first African films to use a local language, Akan.

"The stories of Ananse, his wife and children, are very well known in Ghana, where they are part of national folklore. With this film, I wanted to experiment two things: adapt one of the legends of popular tradition for the screen for the first time, and alternate two languages, English and Akan, in the dialogues" (S. Aryeteey).
