REOU TAKH
by Mahama Johnson Traoré
Country: Senegal
Year: 1972
Duration: 45'
An African American arrives in Dakar to discover his roots and is amazed to find a Westernized and completely alienated city. In his wanderings across the country, he visits the island of Gorée, where the Maison des esclaves stands, one of the rare monuments that preserves the memory of the slave trade.
The film was banned in Senegal.
"At that time there was an interesting debate in Senegal on the responsibility of the African kings in favouring slavery. It was important for me to tackle this problem" (M.J. Traoré).
