Alberto Signetto, who passed away in January 2014, was an uncompromising intellectual, a free, vital and cumbersome man. He was known (and loved) by everyone as Red Rhino. An affectionate portrait of an artist who was passionate and true to himself to the last, with courage, lucidity and irony.

Marilena Moretti

Marilena Moretti (Savigliano, Cuneo, Italy, 1948) is a documentary director and television writer. She was a journalist for “La Stampa,” has written stories and screenplays for Radio Rai, and has made programs for Rai and Mediaset. In 1991, her short Ritratto di Leo participated at the Festival Cinema Giovani di Torino and at the Edinburgh Film Festival. In 2006, she presented the documentary La rivoluzione non è una cosa seria at the Bellaria Film Festival and in 2007 she published the novel Dal basso dei cieli, which she wrote with Peppo Parolini. Two years later, the homonymous documentary, a tribute to Underground Turin and the artist Peppo Parolini, was presented at the Roma Fiction Fest.

“Albert and I met in the early 1980s, at the Rai studios in Turin. We were just starting out. But while I went to Rome like so many others, he decided to stay in Turin. I ran into him thirty years later, when I returned to Turin and went to a retrospective of his works. In those thirty years he had stubbornly continued to make his own kind of cinema, receiving recognitions at international festivals. And yet in Italy he was virtually an unknown. A ‘marginalized filmmaker.’ […] The evening of the presentation I was there in the audience. In front of everyone, in a sort of public confession, he announced he felt worn out by that long battle against the world. That evening I rediscovered him, as a person and as an artist. And I understood the very high price he had paid for his consistency.”
