NOCTURNE THROUGH A PINHOLE CAMERA “The reanimation/liquefying of the photographs of boats at sea
Flashes of light on a black screen. At first everything is confused, then
small details of the fresco of The Great Flood in the church of Santa
Caterina at Galatina, Lecce, appear. Next, photographic details of
desperate people at the mercy of the waves: the drama of the illegal
immigrants who arrive in Italy by boat. The images are motionless,
but the small eye that makes them visible in the middle of the
darkness gives them mobility and focuses our gaze on the suffering
faces and tense bodies of the clandestine travelers.
was obtained through homemade glass filters, whereas some of the
‘revealing’ digital errors opened up new views: the beating wings
of the dove that is generated by the leading, the slow flickering that
is exploded by an unstable zoom, the blurry shots of the naked bodies
swallowed by the blackness like drops of water. All the rest is filmed
through a millimetric pinhole lens that is slid over the faces, deforming
them (recalling the Quinta del sordo by Goya). In the finale, the
horizon is torn by luminescent flashes that reveal the corpses.”

Carlo Michele Schirinzi
Carlo Michele Schirinzi (Capo di Leuca, Lecce, Italy, 1974) is a video maker and artist. In 2004, his short All’erta! won an award at the Pesaro Film Festival, which then dedicated the 2005 retrospective to him. Over the years, the Torino Film Festival has presented much of his work: Astrolìte (2002), Il nido (Special Mention in 2003), Oligarchico (2007), Sonderbehandlung (2008), Notturno stenopeico (Best Italian Short in 2009), Mammaliturchi! (Special Mention in 2010), and Natura morta in giallo (2012). Eco da luogo scolpito was selected at the Venice International Film Festival. He presented his first feature film I resti di Bisanzio (2014) at Pesaro Film Festival and at Doclisboa.
