JE SUIS SIMONE (LA CONDITION OUVRIÈRE)

by Fabrizio Ferraro
Country: Italy, France
Year: 2009
Duration: 82'

JE SUIS SIMONE - LA CONDITION OUVRIÈRE
This is the diary which the French philosopher Simone Weil kept when,
as a twenty-five-year-old, she took a one-year sabbatical from school
and her studies and worked in a Parisian factory from December 4,
1934 until August 1935, running the presses at the Alsthom electric
company. This experience formed the basis for her book La condition
ouvrière
. The written chronicle of her days is visually accompanied by
a continuous flow of dark rooms and the urban landscape of Île Seguin
(suburbs south of Paris), paying particular attention to construction
sites and factories.

“I worked for a long time on this book by Simone Weil and for years
I wondered how I could create openings, white spaces, in a text that
is written so forcefully, marked with such suffering, by the desire to
understand and find answers in the relationship between the exploiters
and the exploited, her awareness of being a pawn who is not permitted
to know the structure of the entire cycle. How to maintain a unitary
fragmentation that is transmitted in the book in the form of
reflections?”
