Elia Kazan, summoned to Hollywood
for his first film, asked Nicholas Ray
to accompany him as assistant director
and accomplice. Based on the novel
by Betty Smith, the film takes place in
turn-of-the-century Brooklyn and tells
the story of the Nolan family. The father,
a charming man but a failure;, the
mother, who has been hardened by life;
relatives and neighbors; and in the
center, young Francie, who would like
to read all the books in the world.
