Jonas Mekas
Jonas Mekas (Semeniskiai, URSS, 1922), durante l'occupazione tedesca è rinchiuso in un campo di lavoro, da cui riesce a scappare nel 1945, rifugiandosi poi in un campo profughi. Dopo essersi laurearo in lettere e filosofia all'Università di Tubinga, pubblica una rivista letteraria e un libro di poesie. Nel 1950 si trasferisce a New York e inizia a occuparsi di cinema. Nel 1955 fonda la rivista «Film Culture» che sarà portavoce del New American Cinema. Nel 1958 inaugura la rubrica «Movie Journal» sul «The Village Voice» e tre anni più tardi realizza il suo primo film sperimentale, Guns of the Trees, diventando uno dei protagonisti della scena underground. Fonda la Film-Makers' Cooperative per la distribuzione dei film dei cineasti indipendenti, cui fa seguito nel 1963 la Film-Makers' Cinémathèque.
