Declaration

film director

I think I was the only person who was hosted in a community, in Rome and Castel Gandolfo, even if I’m not an addict nor an operator. They accepted me as one of them. Together we decided first to write a book (Farsi Uomo. Oltre la droga, Bulzoni Editore, 1981) and then to shoot this film, with ways to face the expressive procedures. The “program”, which refers to don Mario Picchi, head of Ce.I.S., doesn’t expect to be the only chance to gain some results in releasing from drugs, but the set goal is above the wish of freedom from addiction.
The identification of the addict boy in the boy who’s finally free and helps his friend to get to know himself during the process of growth of his personality and the rebuilding through the knowledge of himself and of his own problems in talking to the others come to free from loneliness and distress, two of the first causes of the slavery of “shooting up”.
The question refers, above all, to the lack of love, to the frequent isolation of our society, which prevent the person from feeling alive and fulfilled.
The drug gives the ephemeral illusion of being an escape from all problems, but soon emptiness takes up mind and heart and destroys the man. One can be safe only when reflecting in someone else’s eyes.
The path is long, hard and complex, nobody gives you anything for free, a boy says during a “working group on feelings”.
But when you succeed, it’s an amazing victory, it’s the triumph of life. That’s what we tried to tell, following deeply the existence of those kids, during all of the phases. Nobody was afraid of showing even the hardest times, when it was necessary, someone even proposed to relive particularly thorny situations, which were essential to complete the description, to help those who are trying.
What came out, is a story of direct expressiveness, without the mediation of experts or any sort of simplification. A speech on the skin. But nothing was stolen, every scene was carefully evaluated, discussed, chosen.
For this reason, Farsi uomo. Oltre la droga can be not only a social need, but also a movie style and the television is the best media to show this double aim.
