Young music is seen as unifying moment and voice of juvenile condition. Following the protagonists through a big, industrial city, the result is a one-day-and-two-nights journey inside a distinct language, through the reality of work, the myth of rock, the dream of professionalism, the collective ritual of the concert: the music of young people is the soundtrack of their lives.

Alberto Chiantaretto

Alberto Chiantaretto (1947) is member of the KWK Kinowerke cooperative and he lives and works in Turin. He worked as directors on the following products of KWK: Tolleranza un decimo (1978, 16 mm, black and white, 35 min.); Sei cervi nel parco del re (1979, 16 mm, colour, 25 min.); Officine Savigliano (1979, 16 mm, black and white, 30 min.); La ceramic di Castellamonte (1980, 16 mm, colour, 17 min.); I maestri mobilieri di Saluzzo ( the same); L’oro di Valenza Po (the same); Tutto occupato (1980, 16 mm, colour, 55 min.); Come uno di noi (1981, 16 mm, colour, 52 min.). There are also a few work in progress: Venerdì sera, lunedì mattina (16 mm, colour, 90 min.) for RAI-DSE and Lavoro e salute (temporary title, 16 mm, colour, 30 min.) for SIP.

The initial idea was to verify how music is the unifying moment and voice of the juvenile condition, to understand what this city is, from the current music point of view, to see how young people live their mythologies, the realities of music, the obstacles not to be mere consumers, but also protagonists. We then came to the script with the certainty that we could represent just this world of music, or at least part of it, instead of using the inquiry. When we had to create the movie, we chose to stage some situations, people (found in the places where young people go, in the city), fragments of their life and days. We wanted them to reproduce in front of the camera what they wanted to be in life. They played their lives, cleaning them by the excess of biography, leaving out something and adding something else, in order to give symbolic and general features.
That’s how one part of the film is; the other one is still about investigation and the observation (of the phenomenon or of the individual or of the group) prevails on the representation: people don’t become fictional characters, they don’t play for the camera, but they accept to be followed and observed.
Iggy Pop, on the stage during the concert after the cloudburst, represents the stardom, the provocation and the transgression of music: he’s the “iguana of rock”. In the dressing room, the camera observes and interviews the old rock man, who apart from professionalism, shows a world in which rock is not only a job, but a consistent way of life. In the same way Wanda, a young girl from Turin, a worker, tries to build herself piece by piece, with awareness, facing the project of becoming a rock singer as a full-time job. That’s the same world that Elio (1977 generation, those who were into politics and still are) watches with mistrust and sarcasm in Wanda’s experience and strongly disapproves in his personal analysis of the “music business”.
The combination of two genres, or of two different ways of narrating, is the way we chose to talk about a complex, fragmented, uneven reality. The things that happen to the protagonists, who follow very different paths, never cross if only occasionally or maybe in those places that their separate world offers them.
