Women on the Long March
by Liu Miaomiao
Country: China
Year: 1987
Duration:

In 1935, during the Long March, Mao Zedong and Zhang Guotao disagreed over which strategy to follow. Zhang Guotao was chief of the zone controlled by the Fourth Communist Liberation Army. Instead of going towards Shaanxi, a part of this arrny tried to establish themselves in the west on the border of Sichuan province and Tibet. This area was a 3000-meter-high, cold, and inaccessible plateau. The lack of food, clothing, and medicine as well as the hostility of the local peoples - ethnic minorities who had long been subject to Chinese domination - made it impossible to set up a base in this area. The Fourth Army had no choice but to join their comrades at Shaanxi in order to take up the resistance against the Japanese, as Mao's strategy had called for. Under these circumstances eight women from the women's wing of the Fourth Army decide to try to rejoin their companions, even though they had already lost contact with the rest of the army. Their deep ideal of struggle for the country and for their own liberation spurs them to go on despite their ordeals and the looming presence of death. They cross mountains and hills and finally leave the "prairie". One morning at dawn they find the army column on the march.
