REBELS OF THE NEON GOD
by Tsai Ming-Liang
Country: Taiwan
Year: 1992
Duration: 106'

The film tells the story of two youths. One fine day Hsiao Kang decides not to show up for the school admission exams. While he is wandering around, he runs into Ah Tse, a young delinquent who spends his days running around the city on his motorcycle. Ah Tse owns a big chain to lock the motorcycle, and he doesn't hesitate to use it when someone is bothering him. Hsiao Kang follows Ah Tse and destroys his motorcycle on him. In this way he avenges his father, whose taxi was once damaged by Ah Tse. Things get even worse for Ah Tse. Not only his motorcycle is useless, but his friend Ah Ping gets beaten up by some gangsters. Hstao Kang's situation is not better. In fact, his father kicks him out of the house once he finds out that he didn't show up for the admission exam. And so, now he doesn't know where to go.

"I have always wanted to shoot a film in ShiMenDin, a place in Taipei where youths get together to have a good time. I think that all the inhabitants of Taipei must have had a shock on the day when they demolished HungHuaShangChang, the market near ShiMenDin. After a lightning flash, it seemed that there was nothing there before. And this happened just when I finished my film. The enormous change in Taipei and in ShiMen Din cannot be stopped any more. In my works I have always paid particular attention to people who were adapting themselves. Most changes are painful and cause confusion, but you can always see a little hope. I think that film in Taiwan is changing too, like our city and country. It is one of the worse periods, but at the same time, it is full of possibilities." (Tsai MingLiang)
