TALLINN PIMEDUSES

DARKNESS IN TALLINN
by Ilkka Jarvilaturi
Country: Estonia, Finland, Sweden
Year: 1993
Duration: 99'

In 1991, Estonia has reason to celebrate. The country is at last independent, and a billion dollars in gold, hidden in Paris since 1940 when the Nazis first invaded Estonia, is coming home to Tallinn. There is dancing in the streets: with their newfound freedom, prosperity seems right round the comer. The Soviet Mafia is also gleeful: they have a foolproof plan to steal the billion. When the armoured cars approach the government treasury, the lights will go out all over the city, the guards will be shot, and the gold spirited to a waiting ship. To enact their scheme, the mafia leaders need Toivo, an engineer working at the central power plant, to kill the lights. His pregnant wife Maria encourages Toivo to cut off the power supply in return for the generous payment. As the plan is put into motion, however, things go awry: his wife goes into premature labour, and confusion reigns in the old capital. At the centre of it all, with a gun to his head, is Toivo the underdog.
