At the funeral of their father, a well-known cabinet-maker, the Strano brothers, Tonio and Bruno, quarrel. One brother accuses the other of using cheap wood to build the coffin. The film's tone is set from the start: like Cain and Abel, the two brothers will always at each other's throat. No sooner are they home from the funeral service, Tonio and Bruno divide the huge family estate. Since both are cabinet-makers like their father, they start by stealing each other clients. The fratricidal war has also rubbed off on their wives and children: even the sudden death of Tonio's mate is not enough to reconcile them. Then comes the day when the two brothers come violent/y to blows: when Tonio, his features drawn, returns to the kitchen, Bruno has disappeared. All that remains is a bloodstain and his hat in the gravel of the courtyard. Tonio is immediately accused of murder. After a hasty inquiry, the police imprison him. Left on their own, his two sons, leave the house. Alone with her daughter, Bruno's wife takes over the house and displaying sharp commercial acumen, turns the "family" business into a thriving affair. Three years later, the police summon her to make a formal identification of her husbands presumed body on the basis of personal effects. But a doubt about the truth of Bruno's death fingers. What if it was all a sordid charade of hatred and power?
