Hoop Dreams is the true story of William Gates and Arthur Agee, two kids who were taken off the street and given the chance to attend a prestigious private school "for whites" and play on its legendary basketball team. The two friends' dreams of glory are clouded over by their problems with their teachers, their family life, money, and the competitiveness of athletics. However, their perseverance and steady faith allows them to have their wish come true, joining the NBA officially. The original project had aimed to be a short film on street basketball; but, after William and Arthur were discovered, it was transformed into and epic dayto-day report on the lives of the boys and their families over a fiveyear span. The directors shot 250 hours of film interviews with the boys, their families and friends; sequences of practices and games; peeps into dinners and birthday parties.

Steve James
Born in Hampton, Virginia, Steve James directed and produced documentaries for Kartemquin Films for eight years. He won awards at several festivals. Hoop Dreams is his feature-length film.

Peter Gilbert
Peter Gilbert is a graduate of New York University Film School. He directed music videos and worked as director of photography in several movies and concert films for Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed and others.

Frederick Marx
Born in Philadelphia, Frederick Marx received a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies and political Science from the University of Illinois. He produced, directed and edited a wide variety of educational and industrial films.
