Antonio das Mortes, killer of cangaçeiros, arrives in Jardim das Piranhas in order to eliminate the gang of Coirana, who has declared himself heir to Lampião. Here he finds the megalomaniac delirium of the coronel, the political ambitions of the commissioner, the disappointment of the professor, the solitude of Laura and the mystical crisis of parish priest. He tries to act in the name of his principles of justice and morality, but it will not be so simple.

"At first the dragon is Antonio das Mortes, just as San Giorgio is the cangaçeiro. Afterwards, the true dragon is the large land owner, in that the Professor becomes the Holy Warrior when he gives the cangaçeiros weapons to Antonio das Mortes. All in all, I want to say that there are many social strata that are not eternal and immobile. In fact, all components of social groupings that are solidly conservative, reactionary, or implicated in the power structure can change or contribute to the change of others. It is enough that they understand where the true dragon is." (Glauber Rocha)
