The millionaire Montes de Oca has died leaving a young widow, Magdalena. Magdalena has a twin sister called María who is poor and works as a manicurist. She also has a penniless fiancé called Roberto. The couple spend Christmas eve in a bar. Maria makes an appointment with Magdalena in her room saying that she is planning to kill herself. Instead, she kills Magdalena and swops clothes so that it looks as if María has killed herself and she can now take her sister's place. Montes de Oca has left his wife one hundred thousand pesos which Maria uses to live the high life. She meets Fernando, her sister's former lover, and is forced to make love to him. He uses her and robs her. The police, of which Roberto is an agent, investigate. They discover that Magdalena killed her husband with the help of Fernando. Maria inevitably gets the blame for her sister's crime and condemned to thirty year's imprisonment. It is once again Christmas eve: one year has passed since the crime was committed.
