A famous painter explains to a journalist why he didn't want to sell his painting depicting a nude Indian girl. This event dates back to 1909. In the village of Xochimilco, some humble Indians, María Candelaria and Lorenzo Rafael, refuse to give up their pig: apart from the fact that it is the only worldly good that they possess, they also need it to get married and to pay their debts to the evil Damián. But the latter, desiring Maria, shoot them the pig, and, together with some policemen, accuses Lorenzo Rafael of theft; the Indian is sent to prison. The painter, who wants to paint Maía Candelaria, pays bail. The Indian girl poses for him, but owing to the fact that she is not prepared to remove her clothes, the painter finishes his picture by drawing inspiration from someone else's body. The people, believing that María Candelarla has posed in the nude, burn her orchard, persecute her and throw stones in front of the prison. María dies in the Lorenzo Rafael's arms who, in the meantime, has managed to force open the door of his cell. He places her in his canoe on a bed of flowers and paddles down the canal of Death.
