The Bible and Gun Club explores the theme of the traveling salesman as a symptom of an ailing America. But unlike Death of Sales man and Glenngarry Glenn Rose, the film doesn't analyze the American dream via its implicit liberal ideology; rather it attacks to myths which it might seem bizarre to associate: the Bible (virtue) and guns (violence). Using cinéma- verité style, this first, low budget film begins with a telling scene: Stan tries to entice an old woman to buy a set of collector-edition Bibles, while Phil, across the room, tries to convince her husband to pick up a few firearms. The film eschews classical narration and uses documentary techniques. It takes place during a week-end in a hotel, where the salesmen vegetate in their rooms, duping the new American proletariat, and fighting with their competitors. Each is more cynical and more sadistic than the other.
