Violet finds work at the Changoo cabaret owned by don Gonzalo. On discovering that she is pregnant she is sent away frmn Changoo and begins to prostitute herself. Santiago, a former member of a band of delinquents, is moved by the fact that she is pregnant and offers Violeta work in his new cabaret. She and Santiago fall in love and christen the baby Juanito. Six years elapse. Juanito is now at boarding school and Violeta and Santiago live together. However, Santiago is killed and the cabaret closes. When Violeta sees a pimp hitting Juanito in order to force him to break the law for him, she shoots the pimp and is imprisoned. Juanito, who is now out on the street, manages to buy his mother some shoes by working as a paper boy and shoe shiner. When he goes to the prison, the guards refuse to let him in and the child spends the night at the entrance to the prison. The head of the prison finds him there and recognizes him. He and the child approach the President of the Republic whom they ask to release Juanito's mother. The woman is now free and can live with Juanito.
