MARANA SIMHASANAM

TRONE OF DEATH
by Murali Nair
Country: Egypt
Year: 1999
Duration: 60'

Krishnan lives with his family in the southern Indian state of Kerala on an island in a village that has neither running water nor electricity. Following his family tradition, he works as a seasonal worker, but he struggles to support his wife and family. He is troubled by his desperation and desire to help his little boy, and so he steals some coconuts off the land where he works. Since he has no experience as a thief, he is arrested and accused of a murder that has remained unsolved for many years. There are elections on the island and the two opposing parties both exploit the Krishnan case in order to win votes. The leftist party first calls for the innocent Krishnan to be freed. The party is then seduced by promises of new wealth and hence chooses a type of execution other than the inevitable death by hanging — death by a state-of-the-art electric chair that comes from the United States. In this way Krishnan becomes the first person on the island to obtain a glorious electric death, and a statue is erected in his honor posthumously.
