"This short story originates in something very far away - the house of I pugni in tasca in Bobbio, where I directed a course in professional training for the third time. It was entitled "Making cinema". This was demanding, real, and concrete in the sense that I am convinced that teaching cinema for me is to make it practically. This should involve the course participants, but not democratically so. The first idea about what to «shoot» was suggested to me by Claudia Sbariggia and Gloria Malatesta, whom I involved in the work on a text - how to write a screenplay for a short film very quickly. Claudia and Gloria suggested to me that we start off from the introduction to a book by Ian McEwan, Black Dogs. This was an excellent cinematic idea, but it was something that could not be done because of the means, the places, the people, and the actors upon whom we could count. For this reason, the subject changed. It became another story that we could do, that we could improvise. For this new story we needed the house of I pugni in tasca. The house was the old and the new, the center for many uses, the typical creature of the 1970s and 1989s, the house of the ancestors, the house of unpunished crimes. Here a young man, Giorgio, returns in order to «kidnap» his little niece Elena, who was abandoned by her irresponsible mother and left in the care of the good aunts Mariuccia and Letizia. Giorgio returns to free Elena and to free himself from the past, this time without killing anyone. The initial idea has remained the same partially. The result is an exercise that is amusing and thrilling in its implications for family history. This exercise is an extremely sincere exercise that is valid as a series of notes, the first draft of a film that will no longer be made. This is a re-visitation which, in its scholastic formula - the very active participation of a group of youths - has nothing condescending or morbid in it. The characteristic of Sisters is exactly to make and teach together, to make and to tell directly what we are doing here. The result has its importance, but it also holds what the viewer cannot see - the relationship with a group of young would-be filmmakers and the wealth that comes out of this, which will essentially remain something private" (Marco Bellocchio).
