The story of the beat generation, starting when Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs met in the New York of the 1940's, a meeting which proved to be the catalyst of a literary movement destined to influence fifty years of American counter-culture. Through a series of never-before-released interviews, the movie describes the lives of beatnik artists (poets, painters, jazz musicians) during the '50s and the lives of hippies and politically-involved students during the '60s and early '70s. The documentary analyzes the influence that the ideas of those years had on the feminist and gay rights movements, and how much of the beat spirit is still to be found in the world of art, pop culture and contemporary political movements.
