Maria hates the godforsaken place she lives in. She works in a railroad signals outpost where, with just mentally-troubled Andrzej for company, she spends her time watching the trains pass by. Her brother is a drug dealer, and she depends on her widowed mother for her livelihood. Maria's best friend, Krystyna, who has a spontaneous sexuality, desperately wants to get away. Maria has set her hopes on Zbyszek, a young and attractive machinist, but the man is attracted by Krystyna. When Maria surprises them making love, the friendship between the two women is destroyed. Maria's isolated world begins to unravel: a new companion for her mother, her brother's increasing dependence on drugs, Krystyna's hasty wedding. Maria finally finds the strength to leave that godforsaken place.

Urszula Urbaniak
Urszula Urbaniak graduated from PWSFTviT in Lodz, Poland. She continued her studies at the Northern School of Film and Television in Leeds, England. She has produced shorts, documentaries, and edited a number of productions for Polish television. Torowisko is her first feature film.
