Caccia tragica

Tragic Hunt
by Giuseppe De Santis
Country: Italy
Year: 1947
Duration: 80'

Emilia, 1945. An unemployed war veteran and a few companions, including a woman, hold up a van that is taking money to a cooperative. The money is supposed to cover the costs of buying the land, the animals and the equipment. The criminals escape with a hostage, and are chased by the peasants, who have lost all their money. The thieves, though, are actually the bailiffs of the landowner, who has asked them to fight against this attempt to create a cooperative.

The film was restored in 1997 by the Cineteca Nazionale of the Fondazione Scuola Nazionale di Cinema, using the original nitrate negative. It was necessary to reintegrate 150 meters of the film, which were totally ruined, using a personal copy of De Santis' and a copy owned by Cristaldi Film. The sound track was cleaned and digitally restored maintaining its original monophonic structure.

Biography

film director

Giuseppe De Santis

Giuseppe De Santis (Fondi 1917 - Rome 1997) began working in cinema in the 1940's as a critic, screenwriter and assistant to Luchino Visconti on Ossessione (1942). He participated in the Resistance in Rome and, in 1946, worked with Aldo Vergano on Outcry. In 1947 he debuted in directing with The Tragic Hunt and, two years later, directed his masterpiece Bitter Rice. In 1950 he made Under the Olive Tree, which was filmed in Lazio and is the ideal continuation of the preceding film. He then made Rome 11:00H one of his biggest international successes. In Yugoslavia he directed Road a Year Long (1958), and he went on location in the Soviet Union to direct Attack and Retreat (1964), one of his most emotional films. After a long silence, he participated in the filming of Oggi è un Altro Giorno (1995).
