EREDITÀ DI UNA RIVOLUZIONE

HERITAGE OF A REVOLUTION

Country: Italy
Year: 2000
Duration: 70'

This film goes over the emotional traces and remains of the last great Latin American revolution twenty years after its triumph and ten years after its political shelving in Nicaragua, a country second only to Haiti for poverty. A series of brief testimonies function as an off-camera chorus. The people interviewed have neither names nor roles. They alternate personal recollections with political reflections about the present and future of Nicaragua. They talk about concepts of self-determination and independence, the causes that legitimized the end of the Sandinista revolution, and the changes that era has made in Central America. There are voices and images. There are historical ones of the revolutionary victory. There is the Nicaragua of today with its degraded barrios of Managua, the bars of Leon, the villages of the Mezquita ethnic group on the Atlantic coast, the peasants' cooperatives in the mountains, and the beaches of San Juan del Sur.

"As opposed to the television special, the documentary can and must dare in its language. It should not limit itself to a rational reading of reality. The documentary cannot be objective because the much touted quest for aseptic objectivity - the real myth / nightmare of the television mega-reporter - all too often conceals the self-serving and manipulative partisanship behind it. The documentary ought not to teach. At the most it can stimulate people to get to know" (Luca Pastore).
