An insignificant bank clerk is about to spend New Year's Day alone when he suddenly realizes with terror his ressemblance to a notorious criminal whom the newspapers call the "Ogre of Athens". Because of this misunderstanding, when the police start chasing him he finds refuge in a cabaret and gets acquainted with a gang of criminals who think he is the Ogre and suggest he takes part in a robbery. A cabaret dancer shows interest in him and, driven by his desire to escape his gloomy life and finally become "somebody" he gets entangled in a web of unforeseen events. But the truth will come out and he will come to a sad end…

Nikos Koundouros
Born in Crete, in 1926, he studied painting and sculpture at the School of Fine Arts in Athens. His first feature film, Magic City was presented at the Venice Film Festival (1954). In 1956, The Ogre of Athens established him as a genuine representative of the new age of cinema. Since then, his films have received international acclaim and earned him a place in the vanguard of international cinema.
