In this documentary James Toback asks various people existential questions like: "Why are we born?", "Who are we?" and "Where are we going?". Amongst the people interviewed, boxer José Torres, astronomer Fred Hess, basketball player Darryl Dawkins, and producer Don Simson. At the beginning of the film, James Toback tries to convince producer Joseph H. Kanter to produce a film that has neither a story, a screenplay nor characters.

James Toback

James Toback was born in 1946. He graduated from Harvard University and taught at the City College of New York. He worked as a reporter for magazines such as "Esquire", "Harpers", "Dissent", and "Commentary". In 1974 he debuted as a feature film screenwriter with The Gambler, directed by Karel Reisz. He won an Oscar nomination in 1991 for his screenplay for Bugsy, directed by Warren Beatty. His first film as a director was Fingers, starring Harvey Keitel. His documentary, The Big Bang, won him an Oscar in 1989.
