On September 25, 1983 the Virgin Mary appeared for the first time to Gladys Motta, a poor woman from San Nicol·s, in Argentina. At the same time, the country's biggest steel mill, the area's primary economic resource, collapsed. The town of San Nicol·s faced a terrible crisis and had to convert to a new activity. An extraordinary mechanism transforming the town into a holy place got underway. By 2001, San Nicol·s had turned itself from an industrial city into a tourist attraction exploiting the religious phenomenon.

Enrique Bellande

Enrique Bellande (Buenos Aires, 1972) moved to the provinces as a child and returned to Buenos Aires in 1991 to enroll at the Universidad del Cine, from which he graduated in 1995. He began working as a sound man, and he and his colleague Martin Grignaschi founded La Burbuja Sonido, a sound studio. Following various experiences as assistant director, in 1997 he began working on the project Ciudad de María, which he completed in 2001 thanks to financing from the Jan Vrijman Fund, from the Universidad del Cine and from the director Pablo Trapero. The documentary was presented at many festivals, and received important recognitions.
