Durval and her mother Carmita live in the back of their record shop. One day Durval decides to hire a girl, Célia, to do the housework and to help her elderly mother. The young woman brings a breath of fresh air in their sad existence. But, after her first day of work, she disappears, leaving Durval her five-year-old daughter Kiki, and promising to come back in a few days. Durval and Carmita take care of the little girl but one night, as they watch the news on TV, they discover the dramatic truth behind Célia's disappearance.

The screenplay was inspired by the old record shops you can find in the characteristic Pinheiros neighborhood in São Paulo. The theme of the film is the classic and eternal conflict between mothers and children" (A. Muylaert).
