I-TIGI a Gibellina. Racconto per Ustica

I-TIGI in Gibellina: a Story for Ustica

Country: Italy
Year: 2002
Duration: 150'

Two years after performing his show Ustica, Balata in Forma di Teatro for the first time in Bologna, Marco Paolini performs it again in Gibellina. His face and his words mix in with the story, which this time is being offered in an ideal setting, Gibellina. Right there, just a few kilometers away, is Ustica, a reminder of one of the darkest moments in Italian history.

"When Marco suggested making a film out of his show about Ustica, I asked myself: how can we add a cinematographic dimension without betraying the rigor and the strength of his performance? Il Cretto by Alberto Burri, which is at Gibellina, is so abstract and so terribly rooted to the very location of the earthquake, that it offered us an unrepeatable key. It became both the deuteragonist and the visual means by which I was able to make a movie without losing my focus on theater. Moreover, much of the filming took place in a thunderstorm, which not only made everything much more dramatic, but transformed the performance into a true adventure, with interruptions and makeshift camera work. It was a sort of challenge in which Marco's and the public's participation was truly touching" (Davide Ferrario).
