Les jours ou je n'existe pas

The Days I Don't Exist

Country: France
Year: 2002
Duration: 110'

Antoine's problem is that he only exists for one day out of every two. At midnight, he suddenly disappears, then reappears twenty-four hours later in the same place. A recluse in his apartment, living on a private income, by deliberately depriving himself of all company, he has until now coped, though with some difficulty, with his shameful handicap. But then he meets Clémentine, who is living full-time.

"I would like to conjure up fantasy from the everyday, and to charge the most objectively anodyne things ñ without it being obvious ñ with the strangeness that is proper to this story of a half-existence. And to do so without using any special effects other than editing and language, that magical power of discourse to make invisible things instantaneously exist in the imagination: this is the function of the off-screen commentary by the great uncle, caught in a journey of which we only catch the odd fragment. A literary commentary whose tone might recall those of FranÁois Truffaut, which in addition to showing a commitment to the musicality of the text gives rhythm to the film and imbues it with a particular storybook character" (J-C. Fitoussi).

Biography

film director

Jean-Charles Fitoussi

Jean-Charles Fitoussi (Tours, 1970) discovered cinema thanks to his father, who installed a Super 8 production unit in their basement for editing and showing home movies and comedies (Chaplin, Keaton). Fitoussi made his first film when he was 12. While working in cinema in his hometown, he studied philosophy, science, architecture and plastic arts. After a stage at Aaton Caméras he made his first 16 mm movie, the medium-length film Aura été, based on the shadows and light created by clouds as they pass over fields. Fitoussi then worked as an assistant director, after which he decided to make his first full-length film, D'ici là, in Rome. It was presented at the festival in Locarno in 1997. In the meantime, he founded the production company called Aura été. He met Jean-Marie Straub and Daniéle Huillet in Rome and became their assistant in 1996. In 2001, he presented Sicilia! Si gira, a documentary about the film by Jean-Marie Straub and Daniéle Huillet.
