Histoire de Marie et Julien

Story of Marie and Julien

Country: France
Year: 2003
Duration: 150'

40-year-old Julien, a clockmaker with destructive impulses, decides to blackmail Madame X, a rich woman who traffics in stolen antiques. What he doesn't know is that she has an even more dangerous secret leading to Marie, with whom he had fallen in love the previous year and who has made a mysterious reappearance. A beautiful and enigmatic girl, despite their intensifying love, Marie seems incapable of true feelings, but Julien is ready to crack the mystery and help Marie free herself. Together they go as far as a man and woman can go, to a place where questions of life and death, hope and fear, no longer exist. A place ruled by love without limits.

Biography

film director

Jacques Rivette

(Rouen, France, 1928 - Paris, France, 2016) became involved in cinema as a critic for "Cahiers du cinema." Toward the end of the 1950's he became one of the promoters of the nouvelle vague, both as a theoretician and as a moviemaker. After working as an assistant to Becker, he debuted in 1960 with Paris Nous Appartient, the start of a reflection on the relationship between theater (or art in general) and life, which will be a hallmark of his entire oeuvre. Rivette became acquainted with both success and censorship with Suzanne Simonin, la Religieuse de Diderot in 1966. From L'Amour fou (1967) - presented in a restored version in 2023 - to his last works in 2000s he has established himself as one of the true masters of modern cinema.
