Kdo bude hlídat hlídace? Dalibor aneb Klick Chaloupce strycka Toma

Who Will Guard the Guard? Dalibor or The Key to Uncle Tom's Cottage

Country: Czech Republic
Year: 2003
Duration: 240'

This documentary, which completes the trilogy The Little Capitalist and which reflects on all the fateful events and the problems generated by the revolution in November 1989, takes place inside the National Theater of Prague, where the director J. A. Pitinsky is rehearsing his unconventional version of Smetana's Dalibor. The opera's first act is the starting point for reflections on Czech history and contemporary society, which has to face up to its past; in this act, hard-nosed political opinions mix with reflections on the position of the Czech Republic within Europe. The final act represents a sort of summary of the Czech path to capitalism and the problems of its present economy, but the director also offers a quick glance into the future and asks, how will the Czech environment face globalization?
