"Some years after filming Amor, I returned to Rome
and found insipiration in Borromini and in a groe of trees with empty bird
cages. The buoyant spaces of the cupolas, the sewing of a buttonhole, and the
invisible bird hunt are all elements in the sustained dialogue of the film" (R.
Beavers).
"Inspired by the Baroque architecture of Borromini and
Sassetta's painting St Martin and the Beggar, The Hedge Theater is the
latest work in a cycle of 18 films My hand outstretched to the winged
distance and sightless measure. As with many of Beavers films, elucidates
visual constellations and perceptual analogies out of disparate but closely
related location and processes. These sounds and images always arriving at
delicate counterpoise with convincing surprise. Beavers concepts alway manifest
themselves in film form with a strong feeling for presence and spirit while
heightening our sense of the natural sensousness of the physical world (M. McE).
