Raoul Walsh

Raoul Walsh (New York, 1889, Los Angeles, 1981) began his career as an actor for Biograph and debuted as a director in 1916. Among his silent films, The Thief of Baghdad (1924) is his greatest success, while his western The Big Trail (1930) was a talkie. Walsh was one of Warner's top directors and he developed his dry, concise style particularly in noir films (High Sierra, 1941) and westerns (Distant Drums, 1951). But over his long and productive career (over 130 films) he also dedicated himself successfully to melodramas (Manpower, 1941) and war films (Objective Burma!, 1945).
