In an unspecified time in the future, the planet has been
poisoned by nuclear and bacteriological wars for years. In an effort to
survive the contamination, scientists have synthesized a gene that is
able to autonomously reproduce itself, but the experiment gets out of
hand and humanity is threatened by an army of robots led by the mutant
Brai. The only person who can save the Earth from annihilation is
Casshern, a legendary warrior who has been reincarnated in the body of
young Tetsuya. The film is based on the Japanese animated series Shinzo
Ningen Casshern (1973), known in Italy as Kyashan.
"We wanted to create a flat, two-dimensional world, and purposefully
ignored perspective. My objective was to create a new world, with no
border between fantasy and reality, or between animation and real
action. Nowadays, if you look at Tokyo you see something that looks a
lot like what you see in science fiction films. The future doesn't
excite us anymore. I'm looking for something tangible, which can be
heard, smelled, something homemade." (Kazuaki Kiriya)
