Lady by the Sea
by Martin Scorsese, Kent Jones
Country: USA
Year: 2004
Duration: 52'

A documentary realized to support the fundraising campaign promoted by American Express to reopen the Statue of Liberty, closed since September 11, 2001. "It was an interesting challenge, everything was very compressed. American Express called Martin, 'Can you do this?', 'Yes, but I'm not interested in flag-waving, can we do this?', 'Yes', and then we started. We had to do all the financial stuff, all the production stuff, all the research stuff, all the writing, all the filming, all the editing, all at the same time." (K. Jones) "The Statue of Liberty has worldwide significance and I am grateful to American Express for giving me the opportunity to help in the effort to reopen her doors. The Statue had a profound effect on my grandparents when they first arrived in America in the early 20th century. Through the documentary, I hope to convey that the ideas and values the Statue symbolizes are as powerful and relevant today as they were when the statue was dedicated back in 1886. Reopening the Statue to the public is crucial, and I am pleased to be a part of such an important campaign." (M. Scorsese) Kent Jones, critic and essayist, writes for "Film Comment," "Artforum" and "Cahiers du Cinéma." He co-wrote with Martin Scorsese the documentary My voyage to Italy (1999).
