The friendship
between two
pre-adolescent boys who are forced to grow up too fast. Enrique, a
14-year-old
gold miner is trying to escape from poverty and a life without any
prospects.
Mario, a homeless child, knows his way around the streets of Managua,
Nicaragua
with insolent ease. "There
are many stories that never
get told, that remain hidden among the streets that generated them,
without
every crossing
the confines of their
original territory. The stories of some of the children of Managua are
like
this. A previous experience working
in
the Central American country had left me with a fixed idea: to tell
about the
conditions of the niñez
of this country, because never before in my life had I
witnessed such a
negation of childhood,
such violence
that forces the children to grow up so fast in order to survive.
Managua isn't
just the capital of Nicaragua, it's also the place that best
reflects this
feeling of total abandonment of the world of children." (A.
