L'Allegoria del coatto di Neanderthal

The Allegory of the Neanderthal "Coatto"

Country: Italy
Year: 2007
Duration: 27'

Cesare is a young “coatto” whose tranquil, multi-ethnic provincial life is suddenly turned upside down when he is arrested by detective Gaspardi. Cesare is taken to a mysterious basement for interrogation and is forced to deal with inspector Gaspardi in an increasingly tense confrontation. He finds himself thrown into a surreal situation with Kafka-like overtones and it is only thanks to his street smarts that he manages to prevail.

“Being a ‘coatto’ isn’t a disorder, it’s a prerogative. In fact, it’s the prerogative of the past millennium and it brazenly connotes a good fifty percent of the population of this handicapped Country. We, a Country of rustics, must finally accept that the prelude to incivility is the state of always wanting to be above the others, for the same sterile reasons that made us so arrogant as children. This allegory is simply a microscopic and grotesque vision of a global and equally shameful reality that is the aberrant hyperbole of a useless and corrupt military power.”
