The Mapuche, an indigenous population of Patagonia, live in symbiosis with the natural environment surrounding them. Their territory is a constructive element of their identity. Today, like in the past, the conquest of Patagonia advances along the lines of the old western logic of profit maximization by exploiting natural resources: vast landscapes, water reservoirs, oil, minerals and biodiversity. The Mapuche keep on fighting for their recognition in Argentina’s Constitution, which, since 1994, reaffirms “the indigenous people’s ancestral right to its land.” “The film zeros in on the Mapuche, a tribe of ancient oral traditions, emphasizing their demands which also concern the western world: what ties bind people together in forming a community, a nation that strives for its autonomy? How to defend one’s own ancestral right to land? Their questions lead us to think about the concepts of equality and private property, conveyed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
Biography

Fausta Quattrini
(Locarno, Switzerland, 1964) graduated in architecture in Zurich. In 1996 she founded the Video Atelier in Palermo with the documentary filmmaker Daniele Incalcaterra, with whom she collaborated in editing the collective film Posso darle un facsimile? (1996). In 1997, from Vallegrande, Bolivia, Quattrini and Incalcaterra distributed the documentary www.vallegrande.com through Internet. Between 2000 and 2002 she made a series of self-portraits exploring the relationship between language, body, gestures and video; in 2000, she directed Al di là, a contamination of different forms of artistic expression. She came into contact with the Argentine Equipo of Forensic Anthropology and with the Children of Desaparecidos Association, and in 2003 she made the documentary Organizaciones horizontales.
